Providing Life-Changing Surgeries in the Dominican Republic
In 2011, HanesBrands and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center began working with the Pedro E. Marchena Hospital near our Bonao facility. This unique partnership allows a team of more than 60 surgeons, doctors, anesthesiologists, nurse-anesthetists, surgical nurses and medical students from Wake Forest Baptist to travel to Bonao several times a year to provide critical eye, ear, nose and throat surgeries for our employees and their families. So far, more than 200 children of Hanes employees have been recipients of these life-changing operations.
Our relationship with the Bonao hospital began in 2006, when Hanes employees volunteered thousands of hours to renovate its kitchen as well as its pediatric and maternity wings. We donated an ambulance, state-of-the-art medical equipment for the operating room, and funds to purchase cribs, beds and kitchen equipment.
In preparation for Wake Forest Baptist’s medical missions, the company donated nearly $100,000 from Green for Good funds, and about 900 Hanes employees donated another 2,000 volunteer hours to renovate the hospital’s pre-operation, surgery and post-operation facilities. Hanes and Wake Forest Baptist also donated medicine, anesthesia and other medical equipment to the hospital to enable the surgeries.
The program has impacted not only the health of the patients, but also the skills and awareness of the Bonao medical community. The exchange of ideas between local and United States medical professionals facilitated through this program will greatly enhance the quality of healthcare in Bonao for years to come.
Hanes has given hope for a better future, touched hearts and minds, and transformed people’s lives. Our goal is to expand this program elsewhere in Latin America and Asia.
