HanesBrands Earns Eighth Consecutive U.S. EPA Energy Star Award for Environmental Excellence

As a 2017 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Sustained Excellence Award winner, HanesBrands earned its eighth consecutive EPA commendation for energy conservation, carbon emissions reduction and environmental sustainability. Hanes is the only apparel company to be honored for sustained excellence in the program’s 25-year history.

Energy Star was introduced by the EPA in 1992 as a voluntary, market-based partnership to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased efficiency. The annual Energy Star Partner of the Year award honors organizations that have made outstanding contributions to protect the environment through best practices and organization-wide energy savings.

Hanes – unique in the apparel industry because it owns the significant majority of its manufacturing and supply chain operations – was recognized by the Energy Star program for 2016 accomplishments, including:

  • Integrating newly acquired facilities across multiple continents into the company’s energy-management program;
  • Implementing more than 220 projects identified through energy treasure hunts, yielding nearly $2 million in energy savings; and,
  • Developing long-range energy plans that identify strategic projects to achieve 2020 goals of reducing energy use by 40 percent, carbon dioxide emissions by 40 percent and water use by 50 percent, along with securing at least 40 percent of its energy from renewable sources. Hanes has also committed to diverting 100 percent of waste in its company-owned supply chain from landfills.

“HanesBrands is very honored to earn our eighth consecutive EPA Energy Star award, and all of the credit goes to each of our more than 68,000 worldwide employees who are committed to energy management and environmental responsibility,” said Javier Chacon, chief global manufacturing operations officer. “We have made significant progress in reducing our environmental footprint, but remain steadfast in our drive to achieve the company’s 2020 goals. Doing so is a win-win-win for the environment we all share, the communities in which we operate, and our company and its stakeholders.”
