HanesBrands Conducts Business Risk Assessment for Water
HanesBrands regularly evaluates its potential water risk using tools developed by the World Wildlife Fund and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development.
Water risk analyses utilizing the WWF tool were performed on a cross-section of internal manufacturing facilities, which produce about 80 percent of the products Hanes sells across the globe. Potential risks were divided into three categories: physical, regulatory and brand equity. To date, the primary risk factor (rated low) for the company’s cut-and-sew facilities was location in rural areas where reliable backup water sources do not exist. For textile-producing facilities, one of our two primary locations was rated as a moderately low risk due to slightly stressed watershed; the other was rated as low risk.
The WBCSD Global Water Tool combined all facilities modeled for the WWF Water Risk Filter. In brief, this tool profiled the total water resources available for nine of 13 facilities as watersheds with abundant water and the remaining four as having an adequate water supply.
Based on data from the WWF and WBSCSD modeling tools, Hanes does not face water-supply risks of significant concern.
